Alliance Coal, a subsidiary of Tulsa-based Alliance Resource Partners, held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 6 for its newest underground mine in Henderson, Ky.

Construction of the $35 million operation is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. The mine will be operated by River View Coal, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alliance Coal.

The coal from the Henderson mine will be transported through underground conveyors to the River View Coal’s Waverly operation. From there, it will surface and be conveyed to a terminal located near Uniontown on the Ohio River. Additionally, the mine will feature a 30,000-square-foot portal that is identical to the River View Coal Portal 2.

“River View Coal is excited to expand into Henderson County,” said General Manager Bill Adelman. “The coal industry has faced a lot of challenges in recent years, but this project allows us to continue to mine coal for the power producers who care about providing affordable and reliable electricity to homes and businesses.”

Alliance Coal is currently the largest coal producer in the eastern United States. It also operates mines in eastern and western Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia.
